SRAF International is Launching its First Poetry Slam in Style

Soul’e Ryhmez and Friends, an international online community in Nigeria, is ready to launch its first spoken word poetry show tagged Battle of Words (BOW). The event will be held annually to chiefly discover and promote talented spoken word poets across all boards in Nigeria.
According to the organizers, the maiden edition of the show scheduled to hold on July 22, 2017 at 28, Owokoniran Street, Surulere, Lagos State with the theme ‘We Are the World’ will also be a blend of good soul music and mind-blowing poetic performances from award winning poets like Abegunde Sunday (Speaking Pen International), Paul Njoku a.k.a Free3ingPaul, Oloyede Taiwo a.k.a Tom, Sunsampaul Egwu, and a host of others.
While explaining the idea behind the theme that has been chosen for the maiden edition, Stephen Eneji, the CEO of SRAF International explained that ‘African nations and Nigeria in particular often get too disappointed when they don’t look within. Hence, the theme was chosen to explore the beauty within and stir up the sleeping giants in us’. He added that ‘the talent discovery would be through a process that requires the submission of the written version of interested participant’s spoken word poems in tandem with the theme to srafng@gmail.com. From the submissions, the judges comprising A-list poets –including Mr Folu Agoi (two-time BBC poetry award winner), Mr Olumide Olulu Holloway, Mr Enigmatic Olumide, Miss Cherry Entafield, Mr Adeyeye Olumuyiwa and Mr Prestige Ifeanyi Bernard— will choose the best ten entries that would automatically qualify for performance at the slam. It’s from their performances that the judges will unanimously choose one overall winner that takes the monetary prize of #20,000. This winning poem will be recorded and promoted for free’.
Furthermore, he said ‘the winner alongside other top five poets at the slam will automatically qualify to compete for SRAF Spoken Word Artiste of the Year Award. The winner of this award will be determined through public voting. The winner will also be interviewed on SRAF Pacesetters’ World’. He added that interested participants should note that submission of entries would close on June 30, 2017.
