Buchi Emecheta Dies at 72

Buchi Emecheta, Nigeria’s and one of the world’s finest prolific writers, has passed away. According to reports, she passed on in her sleep peacefully on Wednesday, January 25 in London at the age of 72. Buchi had been based in London since she moved down after
her marriage with her husband Sylvester Onwordi  whom she had been betrothed to from age 11, in 1960. At age 22, she walked out of her unhappy marriage to be free from violence and abuse and worked hard to raise her five children. She authored numerous books including the popular ‘Joys of Motherhood’, the autobiographical novel ‘Second-Class Citizen’, ‘The Bride Price’ and others. She won several awards for being the best in her field and for contributing to contemporary British literature. She was also a visiting professor in so many universities in the US, the Uk and Nigeria.
